We are completely disgusted and unhappy at the ZANU-PF arrogance and complete lack of sincerity which we witness with the continuing detention of innocent activists like Ms Jestina Mukoko, Mr Ghandi Mudzingwa and others.
We are horrified by the arrest of gallant patriots like Mr Roy Bennet who is scheduled to be sworn in as Deputy Minister of Agriculture in the so-called Government of National Unity.
3. We believe the MDC has gone over the top and has more than expected by accommodating the corrupt, rogue ZANU-PF Regime and is perfectly justified to pull out at any time even NOW!

Independence Day: 18 April 2008
Sokwanele : 18 April 2008

To my fellow Zimbabweans I cannot speak to you on the national media, but I speak to you from my heart - that freedom comes and your voice and your vote shall be heard.
Morgan Tsvangirai, 17 April 2008

Statement made by President Morgan Tsvangirai: 17 April 2008

Today on the eve of Independence Day in Zimbabwe, I'm here to thank the World for the help you are giving the liberation struggle of our nation.

This is, in many ways, the saddest Independence Day since our independence from colonial rule in 1980.

Our people are literally starving; Zimbabwe is amongst the worst humanitarian crisis of this new century.

Our humanitarian crisis has political roots, and that gives us hope, because political problems have political solutions.

Zimbabweans have no food because of the policies of President Robert Mugabe; Zimbabweans have no schools, because of the policies of President Robert Mugabe; Zimbabweans have no hospital care, because of President Robert Mugabe's policies.

And on March 29th, the people of Zimbabwe in their largely free election, repudiated President Robert Mugabe and Zanu pf and elected a new government.

For three weeks now, the people of Zimbabwe have waited peacefully.

They have waited for a peaceful transfer of power from the defeated old regime, to the democratically elected new government. So far that transition is not ok'd.

Within days, Italy has counted and announced a new president, in the stark contrast to our situation back home.

Zimbabwe waits.

How long shall Africa's millions wait for democracy to enlighten a continent so rich and endowed in potential?

How many more meetings to discuss crises from Rwanda, to Ethiopia, to Darfur, and to Zimbabwe?

So the nations of the World have done what good neighbours should do: they have enquired; they've asked what's wrong.

They've pounded on our doors. They fear that something is wrong in their neighbour's house and they've raised the cry of alarm.

I want to thank Southern African leaders who met recently in Lusaka. You have let your voice be heard.

I want to thank the leading industrial nations of the World, organised under G8. You have let your voices be heard.

I want to thank the Secretary General of the United Nations. Yours is the voice of the whole World, and you have let the World's voice be heard.

Each nation on its own Independence Day should celebrate its own independence; but it should rightly recognise the independence of others. Independence is raised on the fundamental rights of self-government which belongs to all people in all nations.

While the voices of the World have been raised, many in Zimbabwe have not yet been heard.

There remains no free press in Zimbabwe, so I am using the free news media of South Africa and the World so the people of Zimbabwe can be heard.

We are not alone. And the World is with us.

The World longs for us to take our rightful place again among the community of nations.

To my fellow Zimbabweans I cannot speak to you on the national media, but I speak to you from my heart - that freedom comes and your voice and your vote shall be heard.

The legal authority of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has expired.

Their moral authority has been laughed away. What ZEC says no longer matters.

What matters is the votes cast on 29th of March, and posted outside each polling station.

Those votes elected MDC as the majority in Parliament, and elected me as President of Zimbabwe.

The regime is conditioning people to believe that there is a run-off.

There is no run off: we won this election decisively.

In preparation for this, Robert Mugabe and his hand of criminals have unleashed an orgy of violence against the people.

As I speak, our people are being murdered, their homes are being burnt, children molested, women raped.

We have seen again the brutal vindictiveness of this man.

We want to thank President Mbeki for all his efforts, but President Mbeki needs to be relieved from his duty.

However, we've asked President Mwanawasa to lead a new initiative to urgently deal with the extraordinary situation we face at this moment.

We cannot wait another day, we cannot wait another week: we need a special envoy or a special committee or a delegation to come to Zimbabwe immediately, and deal with the issue following the Kenyan model. [A delegation] who will stay in the country until an agreement and a solution has been found..

Zanu-PF wants bloodshed, but instead we will shed light on that bloodshed.

We shall fight with the truth, and take the strength of our courage and conviction to see the value of life, law and liberty, return to our country and to our continent.

The movement has begun, and I ask you members of the media to join us in ensuring that the objective of democratic change in Zimbabwe is achieved.

I thank you.

In the absence of a free press in our country, Sokwanele is circulating this statement made by President Morgan Tsvangirai on the eve of our Independence Day. We are also including in this mailing a Statement released by the MDC party today (below), and we are providing a brief summary of some of the protests that have been taken place around the world, in support of the Zimbabwean pursuit of freedom and justice in our country.

We are not alone.

Statement from the MDC : 18 April 2008

Zanu PF hijacks people's independence

Today the MDC would like to join all Zimbabweans in commemorating their 28th Independence anniversary.

18th of April is a day that we all cherish as it has brought us the independence that make us proud to be Zimbabweans and hold our heads high among other nations.

However, as we celebrate this occasion, it is sad to note that our independence anniversary has been discredited by the Zanu PF regime that is masquerading as a government and as the custodians of our independence.

Today the people of Zimbabwe have been denied a chance to celebrate their independence by an illegal regime that is denying them a chance to make sure that their gains of independence are enjoyed.

In the 29 March elections, Zimbabweans went to the polls in their millions and voted for change and a new beginning.

They voted for Morgan Tsvangirai as the President of Zimbabwe but however, 20 days after that day, the people of Zimbabwe's hopes are being dashed as the results of the Presidential poll that President Tsvangirai won are being kept a secret by a scared regime.

We are in a calamity as the people who are supposed to be celebrating are instead being beaten up by the police, the army and Zanu PF militia.

Hundreds of innocent people including journalists are today in police custody. Homes of innocent villagers have been burnt in areas such as Mutoko, Murehwa, Chimanimani, Chipinge and Mudzi have been burnt to ashes simply because the people voted for the MDC in the last elections.

In urban areas, residents are being forced to be indoors by 8.00 pm by a regime that is scared because it is in power through illegal means.

People are now living in fear as the Zanu PF regime is using all forms of brutality in order to stay in power.

As we commemorate this day lets remember our colleagues who have been killed, beaten and left homeless by the Robert Mugabe regime. Lets remember Tapiwa Mubwanda who was ruthlessly killed by Zanu PF militia in Hurungwe last Saturday.

The world is taking action

This banner, measuring 278m², was flown over the United Nations building in New York earlier this week at the same time that Thabo Mbeki was inside chairing a special meeting of the UN Security Council. To put the size into perspective, a football pitch measures approximately 210m²; there is no doubt that Thabo Mbeki saw the message - whether he got the message remains to be seen.

In addition to that, Avaaz.org, the international organisation who organised the banner also delivered Thabo Mbeki a petition that has been signed by over 150,000 people so far. 150,000 people is a lot of signatures: it is the equivalent of the total number of people who voted in Matabeleland North province (according to ZEC figures!)

There are three days of protests taking place in London outside the Zimbabwean Embassy. They started yesterday and end tomorrow on the 19th April.

In Cape Town, two human rights groups joined forces and protested yesterday on behalf of Zimbabweans and against Thabo Mbeki's statement that there was "no crisis" in Zimbabwe - the signs at the protest say it all.

Tomorrow, a public event will be held in The Hague - Africa Day 2008 - where the situation in Zimbabwe will be openly debated.

In another gesture of support for the people of Zimbabwe, we have been told that there has been a 'media frenzy' over reports that a Chinese ship docked in Durban has a consignment of weapons destined for Zimbabwe. The South African people are not at all happy about having anything to do with the oppression of the Zimbabwean people. Satawu - the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union - have come out and refused to offload the ship. Their general secretary, Randall Howard, said:

"Satawu does not agree with the position of the South African government not to intervene with this shipment of weapons... Our members employed at Durban Container Terminal will not unload this cargo neither will any of our members in the truck driving sector move this cargo by road." He said the ship, the An Yue Jiang, should not dock in Durban and should return to China.

Satawu are planning to enlist the support of COSATU to strengthen their position.

Finally, also in South Africa, a group of Zimbabwean refugees have embarked on an amazing journey - a real march for freedom. They are walking all the way from Johannesburg to Musina to protest the fact the Presidential results have not been released yet.

Apparently people are warmly greeting the walkers all along their route: cars are hooting in solidarity; they are being offered money, food and water; and people are coming out to join them and walk for a bit. We hear that in one town they passed through, the mayor came out and welcomed them. They will arrive in Musina today.

The whole world can see what Robert Mugabe is trying to do and they are angry with his attempts to subvert the will of the people. They are also becoming increasingly frustrated with Thabo Mbeki's ineffectual policy of 'quiet diplomacy' .

We all remember that Thabo Mbeki recently popped in to visit Robert Mugabe and emerged from the meeting to declare that there was "no crisis" in Zimbabwe. Well, five short days later - yesterday - the South African government's spokesperson has acknowledged the fact that "The situation is dire".

Non violent action is having an impact. We are not alone Zimbabwe

@@@@@@@@@SA Union refuses to unload arms ship@@@@@@

             @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Opposition to a shipment of arms being offloaded in Durban and transported to Zimbabwe increased today when South Africa's largest transport workers union announced that its members would not unload the ship.

SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) general secretary Randall Howard said: "Satawu does not agree with the position of the South African government not to intervene with this shipment of weapons.

"Our members employed at Durban Container Terminal will not unload this cargo neither will any of our members in the truck driving sector move this cargo by road." He said the ship, the An Yue Jiang, should not dock in Durban and should return to China.

South Africa cannot be seen to be facilitating the flow of weapons into Zimbabwe at a time where there is a political dispute and a volatile situation between the Zanu-PF and the MDC."

"The view of our members is that nobody should ask us to unload these weapons," he said.

Satawu said it planned to engage support from the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu).

Defence secretary January Masilela told Sapa today that the scrutiny committee of the National Conventional Arms Control Committee's (NCACC) scrutiny committee, which he chairs, had approved the conveyance permit on Monday already.

He said a inspection team from the NCACC would still have to ensure the cargo met the requirements of the permit before the cargo could begin to be transported to Zimbabwe. The permit would be endorsed by the NCACC when it meets next month.

Asked about the controversy surrounding the shipment Masilela said: "This is a normal transaction between two sovereign states. We are doing our legal part and we don't have to interfere."

In Cape Town, government communications head Themba Maseko said the country could not stop the shipment from getting to its destination as it had to be seen to be "treading very carefully" in its relations with Zimbabwe, given the complexity of facilitating talks between the Movement for Democratic Change and Zanu-PF.

Chris de Vos, the secretary general for the United Transport and Allied Trade Union, said the union was "not happy" about the arms shipment being transported through South Africa.

"We are going to request an urgent meeting with the management. We are aware that members are very uncomfortable with the situation," he said.

He said that while no decision had been taken by the union on offloading the weapons and arms, the union leadership was not in favour of the weapons being transported.

Democratic Alliance defence spokesman Rafeek Shah said the government's approval to allow the arms to be shipped was "the surest sign yet that government has completely lost the plot on the Zimbabwe issue".

Shah said: "The world's astonishment at President (Thabo) Mbeki's political defence of Robert Mugabe will likely turn into outright anger as we are now not only denying the existence of a crisis in Zimbabwe, but also actively facilitating the arming of an increasingly despotic and desperate regime."

Kallie Kriel, AfriForum chief executive, said the organisation intended organising "an extensive campaign of peaceful demonstrations in an effort to prevent a consignment of Chinese arms from being transported from Durban across South African territory to Zimbabwe".

The SA Institute of Race Relations said on Thursday: "It would be unconscionable for South Africa to allow an arms consignment through its borders en route to Zimbabwe."

Spokesman Frans Cronje said that if the shipment went ahead, "South Africa's culpability in the Zimbabwe crisis would then be without question".

Noseweek editor Martin Welz told Sapa yesterday that "the cargo ship was openly delivering a containment of arms for Zimbabwe". He said he had copies of all the documents, including the bill of lading and a packing list.

The controversial cargo packed into 3,080 cases included three million rounds of 7.62mm bullets (used with the AK47 assault rifle), 69 rocket propelled grenades, as well as mortar bombs and tubes. The cargo is, according to the documentation, valued at R9.88 million. Welz said: "It's very detailed and even has the phone numbers."

Increased media interest around the shipment prompted both the SA Police Service and the SA Revenue Service to send their top public relations officers to Durban to deal with media enquiries.

Adriao said he would only comment on the ship once it had docked in port while Lackay said that the work of the SARS "is guided by the SARS Act and the confidentiality provisions in the Act".

Lackay said: "SARS Customs does not release cargo until the Customs declaration has been processed and the requirements of the any other legislation have been adhered to. On the basis of the documents submitted by the shipping line - the company operating the vessel - SARS Customs decides whether there is a potential risk, whether cargo must be inspected and whether or not goods will be detained.

"These are standard Customs procedures that apply daily to any cargo vessel entering a South African port of entry. At this time the vessel.

"An Yue Jiang is at outer anchorage or off-port limits and therefore the cargo is not deemed to have been imported into South Africa yet," he said

####Zim exiles install 'envoy'; demand to be heard ####

        ####################

April 17, 2008 Edition 2

Graeme Hosken and Sapa

Scores of Zimbabweans marched on the high commission in Pretoria yesterday to "install a new high commissioner".

The march in Arcadia came as a Chinese vessel carrying a large consignment of small arms prepared to dock in the Durban harbour.

The ship, the An Yue Jiang, is carrying a consignment of arms headed for Zimbabwe.

Leading the protest, Zimbabwe Diaspora Forum chairman Sox Chikohwero said they were calling on President Robert Mugabe to step down.

"The people of Zimbabwe have spoken. They want a new government. The people must be heard. Mugabe must go.

"We are here to claim what is rightfully ours; and that is our home, Zimbabwe. We are tired of dictators.

"We want the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in power. They are democratically elected and must represent us," he said.

Introducing the "newly appointed high commissioner", Joyce Dube, Chikohwero said she was the person the people of Zimbabwe wanted to represent them..

"This is our chosen voice. She has our interests at heart," he said.

Dube said she wanted to ensure that Zimbabweans were looked after and that they enjoyed the same rights they enjoyed at home.

"I will not allow our people to be abused and misused. The people here are only concerned about themselves," she said.

Zimbabwe Revolutionary Youth Movement secretary-general John Chikwari said they were there to reclaim what was theirs.

"We want our embassy back. The ambassador here is no longer our ambassador as Mugabe is no longer our president."

He said if necessary they would take up arms against the current government. "If they do not listen to us we will fight them."

MDC chairman in South Africa Malcolm Mutandiro called on President Thabo Mbeki to stop supporting dictators, and to stop acting like one himself.

"Is he blind? How can he not see the crisis in Zimbabwe? Mbeki needs a reality check. He needs to realise what is happening on his own doorstep.

######China ships arms of war to Zimbabwe####

###########################################################################

China has secretly shipped tens of thousands of small arms to the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, raising fears the consignment has been brought in to crush any attempts to unseat Robert Mugabe from power.

The consignment has cost the regime millions of United States dollars and came through Durban harbour in a Chinese registered vessel, An Yue Juang.

It includes 3 million rounds of ammunition for AK47 rifles, the standard assault weapon for the country's defence forces. There were also 1,500 rocket propelled grenades, a support weapon for the infantry, plus 3,500 mortar bombs.

Martin Welz, editor of Noseweek a Durban based investigative magazine, told Newsreel on Wednesday they were in possession of the shipping documentation of six containers addressed to the Ministry of Defence in Harare. The arms were bought from a Chinese arms company called Poly Technologies, based in Beijing.

'The ship did in fact dock in Durban between the 10th and 13th April and the six containers weigh between 8 to 15 tonnes, Welz said.

He added; 'There is also the declared policy of the commander of the defence forces Chiwenga, that he will not recognise a democratically elected president unless it happens to be Mugabe. Zimbabwe is not at war with anyone, so the purchase of such an arms consignment should be very worrying

Presient Thabo Mbeki who was mandated to by the SADC to lead the diologue stated clealy that his aspiration was that the  March 2008 elections needed to be held in circumstances where the outcome of such  would contestable.Even the nogotiations collapsed before reaching their final conculusion, there were some changes in the electoral laws  that resulted in visible changes on the ground in terms of election management process as follows:

The accreditation of journalists was smoother and ealier than in previous elections even though the gonernment erred in being selective on whom it invited o observe.

There were however some ares of concern as well. These will be enumerated in due course as various organisations do their individual and collective election report as necessry. However the biggst concern that has emerged is the inordinate delay in election announcing of the election result. The couting was done immediately after the polls were shut generally around 7 pm on 28 March 2008 at the polling stations. The results were posted at the polling stations immeditely and there is significance corncern at the failure of the ZEC to annonce these results more 36 hours after the voting stopped. There seems to be absolutely no justice for this delay and the tokenistic announcement of results for 109 contested positions by 8am on 1 April 2008 is wholly inadequate. We as Zmbabwean youths are concerned by the failure to announce the results timeously. This creates a founded suspicion in the minds of Zimbabweeans that the authorities are trying to manipulate the results  in order to get their prefferd party candidates to win. This is escipecially  so given that the opposition has already been expressing public concern at what they saw as measures that were being taken to  manipulatethe vote and rig the electionThis delay , if it persist will result in the likelihood of the outcome of the elections being contested and in process undermining  what ever small gains may have arisen from the SADC efforts. We are naturally gravely concern that any contestation of outcome of the elections is also likely to lead to escalation of conflict. With the weak rule of law environment that has been well documented before, the elections may trigger seriuos and potentially widespread violations of human rights in Zimbabwe.

We are aware that the Zimbabwean government has deployed police, army and intelligence units into the major cities in anticipation of potential trouble.Of significance concern are the unconfirmed rumours that allegedely from the security branches of govenment that the incumbent is preparing to declare a state of emergency after announcing the inaccurate results. This is consistence with the threats by the security chiefs that hey are not prepared to accept the election results if Mugabe loses the election

@#@#@#DEMOSTRATION AT UNION BUILDINGS ,PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI OFFICES BY THE REVOLUTIONARY YOUTH MOVEMENT OF ZIMBABWE###

@#@#@On the 27 march  2008 Revolutionary Youth Movement of Zimbabwe staged a demostration at the Presidential offices at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.Since we noted that these upcoming elections are very crucial  we decided to hand over a petition to South African President with regard to the election. We have noted with great concern that South Africa is part and parcel of the observatory mission to the Zimbawean elections and decided it very emperative to hand over a petition to the president Thabo Mbeki. The president of South Africa had for a long time derailing the talkis in Zimbabwe since he was choosen as the mediator till the elections were done and this left us as youths begging for more questions.Recalling the previuos elections in Zimbabwe SA was the first mission to endorse the rigged elections yet they are pretending to be concerned with the deteriorating crisis in Zimbabwe and to a no avail. We urged the SA mission not to endorse the rigged election and to it as it is on the ground.

May I take this opportunity to inform you that the undersigned movement will be having a demonstration at the Pan-African Parliament offices on Tuesday, 12 February 2008.These demonstrations are so important as they will also help in keeping the World Cup here in SA.
With the current situation we are heading for disaster as FIFA is consulting extensively on whether the lucrative tournament is supposed to be shifted to Australia because of Zimbabwe situation.
We are going to highlight all this on this day. What it means is that collective efforts is the only solution in bringing Zimbabwe back to normal and then have our World Cup for the first time in Africa.
It is a very sensitive issue which might take too long for ordinary people to see and by the time we will realize it, it will be too late. The demonstration will start at 10 am and ends at 12 noon. For more information please contact the President on 079 619 2955.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Pan African Parliament.
Yours in the struggle of liberating Africa
